Retirement Income protection for Life.
Fixed Income Annuities
You have worked hard to get where you are. Like a lot of others, you are probably saving for retirement at work through a 401(k), and/or on your own through an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). You have experienced the euphoria of stock market highs, and the devastation to your portfolio(s) during a market downturn. As you look toward retirement you may be wondering if there are more predictable and reliable streams of income which could provide protection in case of inevitable economic downturns, while mitigating reliance on Social Security in the future.
Fixed Income Annuities are one way to help create a guaranteed income stream; and in some cases, help accumulate additional retirement savings. An annuity is an insurance product designed for retirement in which you have an agreement with an insurance company that lets you put away money for retirement in a lump sum or through regular periodic payments in return for payments to you immediately or in the future, for a defined period or more commonly the rest of your life. There are three types of fixed income annuities: immediate annuities, fixed deferred annuities, and fixed indexed deferred annuities.
An immediate annuity provides you an immediate and guaranteed stream of income in exchange for a lump sum of cash. Immediate annuities have several advantages, such as long-term stability, tax-deferred income, and monthly income payments for the rest of your life. Immediate annuities are often used in retirement planning to provide income certainty regardless of market conditions, and to fill potential gaps in monthly income needs when social security and pensions are not enough.
A fixed deferred annuity is designed to help you accumulate funds for your retirement. You purchase a fixed deferred annuity with either a single payment or a series of payments. Your money earns interest at a fixed rate for a specific time (deferral period) and grows tax deferred until you withdraw the money as income. Because there is no exposure to market risk, your principal is protected.
A fixed indexed deferred annuity offers the opportunity to earn interest that is linked to the changes in the performance of an index. By tracking the performance of an index to earn interest, you’re in a position to potentially earn higher interest than you would with many fixed interest products but without added risk, because with an indexed product, you are not investing directly in the stock market and thus your principal is protected.
